- his operas, Four Saints in Three Acts and The Mother of Us All; in
- New York City. From 1940 to 1954 he was an acidic and witty music
- critic for the New York Herald Tribune. "The way to write American
- music is simple," he once said. "All you have to do is be an
- American, and then write any kind of music you wish."
